RESPIRATION PHYSIOLOGY: BLOOD GAS TRANSPORT
Dissolved Oxygen Notes

1.    The relation between PO2 and CO2 for dissolved O2 is linear.

2.    Question:  How much dissolved oxygen is present in normal systemic arterial blood?

3.    Normally, the dissolved oxygen represents less than 2% of the total oxygen in the blood.

4.    Uses for high-oxygen hyperbaric chamber:  (1) treatment of local tissue ischemia (e.g. gas gangrene);  (2) treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning. But note possible side effects: pulmonary oxygen toxicity (e.g. pulmonary edema), CNS effects (e.g. seizure).
